Fieldstone Retaining Walls
Sometimes, you just need a retaining wall. The question sometimes isn’t IF you need a retaining wall, but how it should be shaped and what to construct it out of.
In the photo example in this blog, you can see that a driveway coming down a slope required a retaining wall. The retaining wall was designed to have steps come through the wall for access from above to a lower area. In this instance, the homeowner decided to go with natural stone products. The retaining walls are constructed out of New Hampshire fieldstone, and the steps are granite. Other options such as concrete retaining wall block systems are an option, but this homeowner chose natural stone.
Natural stone gives such a gorgeous classic look and lasts like nothing else.
We construct our fieldstone walls to have mortar on the inside for strength and stability while maintaining a look of being “dry laid”on the face of the wall (meaning no mortar shows on the face of the wall). The mortar does show on the top cap of the wall which keeps water from getting into the wall and breaking it apart with ice.
In the photo here, you can see an incredible design detail. Look at how the cap of the wall slopes down and comes to a point. This wall took real artisanship to create!
Simple, classy, beautiful and functional. This landscape project which included fieldstone retaining walls and granite steps is a stunner.
